Approximately 5.8 million people live within three miles of a Superfund site in Southern California. Many of these areas have experienced long term environmental contamination due to factors like industrial activity and urban development.
At the same time, there is a growing public health concern around liver disease, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
Research Project 2 will be the first long-term study to explore how PFAS exposure may contribute to liver fat accumulation in two Los Angeles-based cohorts living near Superfund sites. The Community Engagement Core (CEC) will help build strong partnerships to support prevention efforts and work collaboratively on policy strategies that aim to reduce exposure and protect health, drawing on input from local stakeholders and ShARP research findings.
